The increase in severe flu cases has proven tragic where children are concerned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly, in the first two weeks of December, three children between the ages of five and nine have died from influenza A-related complications in the Ottawa and Eastern Ontario Health Unit regions,\u201d stated the EOHU. \u201cThis is a stark reminder that the flu can lead to severe illness and complications that require hospital care. With much of the respiratory illness season still ahead, we anticipate this will continue to be a challenging flu season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EOHU noted a \u201chigher-than-usual\u201d number of flu cases in the region so far. Everyone six months of age and older must get their flu vaccine inoculation \u201cas soon as possible\u201d. Parents are urged to have their children vaccinated and make sure they themselves are also vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccine takes two weeks to reach full effective strength so getting vaccinated now will help reduce the risk of flu infection during the holiday rush.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccination is available at medical centres and community health centres for anyone six months and older; at participating pharmacies for anyone two years and older; from EOHU offices for children aged six months to five-years-old, and their parents. EOHU vaccination service is available by appointment only. Call 1-800-267-7120 to book an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>The EOHU also urges residents to continue proper hygiene habits to help reduce the risk of spreading the flu virus. That includes frequent washing of hands, avoiding touching one\u2019s own face with unwashed hands, covering the mouth when coughing and sneezing into tissue or a sleeve if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who is sick for any reason should stay home. Anyone who is ill should avoid visits to seniors at home or in retirement care and hospitals. Seniors are most vulnerable to flu infection because their immune system is weaker.<\/p>\n<p>If a person who is ill or at high risk of being ill must go out, they should wear a mask for their own protection and the protection of others.
