Plans for making L’Orignal Park better for future family recreation and also visiting tourists take another step.
Champlain Township council gave unanimous approval to creation of a L’Original Park Project working group to help guide the future development and enhancement of the community park. Approval followed review of a report from Parks and Recreation Director Sydney Collard during the February 26 council session.
“L’Orignal Park is a key community asset that supports recreation, leisure, and community events within the Township of Champlain,” stated Collard in the report. “The township’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan identifies L’Orignal Park as a significant municipal park and notes the need for continued investments and improvements to respond to community needs, enhance functionality, and support long-term use.”
Collard’s report recommended creation of a L’Orignal Park Project working group to help advise council on future development plans for the community park that meet local priorities and funding and budget goals.
Terms of reference for the duties of the group include: reviewing available capital works funding for improvement projects at the park; reviewing proposals for improvement projects and evaluating them based on guidelines for public safety, accessibility, community benefits, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness; confirming that project proposals match the guidelines of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and also conform to municipal policies and bylaws; consider operation and maintenance costs for proposed projects, help and support township staff on identifying potential priorities for park projects and preparing analysis reports and recommendations for council to review and consider for approval or rejection.
The working group will include the parks and recreation director, the chief administrator, other staff with necessary expertise, and up to four council members appointed to the group.
Councillors André Roy and Michel Lalonde of Ward 2/L’Orignal and Councillors Paul Burroughs of Ward 3/Longueil and Sarah Bigelow of Ward 4/West Hawkesbury were appointed to the working group.
