Cougars keep winning

The wins just keep adding up this season for the Vankleek Hill Cougars.

The end of the November game schedule in the National Capital Junior Hockey League found the Vankleek Hill Cougars continuing their winning streak, defeating the Metcalfe Jets 6-3 last Friday at the Larry Robinson Arena and 5-2 Saturday night at home against les Aigles de Saint-Isidore.

Garrett Cunning started the goal-scoring for the Cougars against the Jets three minutes into last Friday’s game, with Zachary Sullivan providing an assist.

The period mid-mark saw Alexander Chenier add the second point of the night to the Cougars’ score, with help from Ethan Butler and Alexandre Mayer.

The Cougars continued to dominate first period with Liam Lynn popping in a mid-period goal, assisted by Bradley Horner and Jacob Crete. Butler added a fourth goal to the Cougars’ tally in the latter half of the period, with assists from Mayer and Chenier.

Two minutes before the end of the period, the Jets get on the scoreboard with a goal by George Carson, assisted by Parker LeBlond.

A power-play effort early in the second period gave the Jets their second goal off the stick of Zach Branchaud, with assists from Carson and Nick Aubrey.

The Jets continued to own second period with another goal for Metcalfe from Branchaud, with the help of Matthew Saari.

Third period saw the Cougars take back control of the scoreboard with Crete firing in a goal two minutes into the play. Bradley Horner and Cougars assistant captain Cody Horner assisted.

Cunning started the Cougars’ goal run through the game and he finished it with the team’s final point scored in the latter half of third period, with help from Lynn and Callum Nystrom.

In the Cougars Den

Saturday night the Cougars shot down Saint-Isidore 5-2, with Liam Lynn opening the scoreboard five minutes into the game. Assisting him were Zack Langlois and Ryder Hill.

Saint-Isidore answered back early into the second-period play with a goal by Owen Corput, assisted by Hugo Gagne and Justin-Samuel Fortin.

Lynn broke the tie in the Cougars’ favour with a power-play push at the period midmark, assisted by Jacob Crete and Bradley Horner. Sydney Benoit’s solo goal for Saint-Isidore soon after tied the score back up.

Cody Horner, with help from Crete, broke the tie with the winning goal of the game in the last six minutes of the period.

Third period saw Bradley Horner extend the Cougars’ lead early on in the play. Assisting were Cody Horner and Garrett Cunning.

Rylan Wolowicz fired in the final goal of the night two minutes before the end of the game. Assisting him were Zack Langlois and Zachary Sullivan.

The Cougars host the Jets again December 6 then head to Morrisburg on Sunday to face the Lions.
