The Vankleek Hill Cougars have taken the lead now in the National Capital Junior Hockey League standings.
Still undefeated after 11 games played since the season began, the Cougars are listed at the top of the league standings with 22 points.
Les Aigles de Saint-Isidore also have 22 points in their NCJHL standings, but they have played 13 games and lost two of them. That gives Saint-Isidore a 0.846 per cent win position against Vankleek Hill’s perfect 1.000 per cent standing.
The Cougars scored their 11th victory of the season with a 5-2 win on home ice against the Westport Rideaus last Saturday night.
Ethan Fowler of the Rideaus put Westport on the scoreboard first with a power-play goal in the middle of first period. Assisting him were Robert Onion and Ben Peladeau.
Cougars assistant captain Cody Horner answered back six minutes later, with help from Jacob Crete and Nolan Macmillan.
A short-handed goal from Braden Belot during the last two minutes of the period broke the tie in Westport’s favour and gave the Rideaus the lead going into second period. Assisting Belot was Lane Morency.
The one-point lead for Westport disappeared in second period with Zachary Sullivan tying up the score at the mid-mark. Aiding him on the Cougars’ second goal were Rylan Wolowicz and Alexandre Chenier.
Bruno Laframboise scored what proved to be the winning goal for Vankleek Hill eight minutes before the end of the period. Assisting him were Sullivan and Ryder Hill.
Liam Lynn extended the Cougars’ lead two minutes later, with help on the scoring from Zack Langlois. Lynn fired in the final goal of the night about a minute before the end of second period on a power-play push. Assisting him were Reid Cunning and Bradley Horner.
Sunday’s scheduled game between the Cougars and the South Grenville Rangers was cancelled. The next game for the Cougars is against the Metcalfe Jets at the Larry Robinson Arena November 28. The Cougars are back in the Den this Saturday night for a game against Saint-Isidore.
