Weather doesn’t dampen ‘Trash ‘N’ Treasure’ event

The weekend weather was a bit wet but it still did not dampen the spirits of the dedicated bargain hunters who took to the streets during Trash ‘n’ Treasure Day in Vankleek Hill.

The pickings were a bit slimmer this year than most for the annual community outdoor bazaar event. Past years for Trash ‘n’ Treasure Day have seen Vankleek Hill’s Main Street and numerous neighbourhood side streets filled with sidewalk bargain booths and kiosks offering everything from used books to clothing to jewelery to collectibles.

What has become a popular community garage sale sees most householders empty out attics and basements and offer used-but-good-condition items for sale to anyone who can get a little more use out of kitchen utensils, carpenter tools, dog-eared paperbacks, and other items. Artisans and craftsfolk also take advantage of Trash ‘n’ Treasures Day to present their homemade jams, jellies, dessert treats, or one-of-a-kind crafts for sale to browsers.

The early-morning rain Saturday and the afternoon drizzles that followed discouraged most people from setting up their sales tables this year. But there were still a number of vendors with booths along Main Street and a couple other neighbourhood streets to make it worthwhile for people seeking good condition item or unique treasures to spend the day browsing.
