The critters have recently been spotted on nature trails around Russell Township. The municipality said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests did not allow for relocation of foxes.

“Therefore, although they may be cute, we ask for residents not to feed the foxes on the recreational trail,” Russell Township said in a statement. Parks Ontario warned that feeding foxes was extremely dangerous for the animals, leading to dependence and familiarity with humans.

This could lead the foxes into residential streets or busy roads, where they risk injury or death from vehicles and domestic animals. There’s a risk to humans, too; foxes have a nasty bite and could carry diseases.

“Next time you spot a wild creature, just stay still and silent,” Ontario Parks recommended. “Savour your encounter and show respect for your fellow creatures.”
