Mathew Brisebois, 30, has been charged with second degree murder following an investigation into the death of Timothy Provost, 32, in Alfred-Plantagenet. An autopsy revealed Provost died as a result of a stabbing injury. His body was discovered by police on Thursday, Feb. 22.

Suspect charged after suspicious death in Alfred confirmed as murder

Police from the Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) announced Monday morning, Feb. 26, that the suspicious death in Alfred-Plantagenet last week was in fact a murder after a postmortem examination revealed the cause of death to be a stabbing injury. Mathew Brisebois, 30, is charged with second degree murder for the death of Timothy Provost, 32.

Police and Prescott-Russell paramedics responded to a residence on County Road 17 just before 8 p.m. on Feb. 22, 2024, and found the body of Provost in the apartment.

Brisebois was arrested at the Hawkesbury detachment « without incident » on Sunday, Feb. 25, according to police. He was charged with second degree murder and will remain in custody until a bail hearing on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Ontario Court of Justice in L’Orignal.

The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service continue to lead the investigation. The OPP Forensic Identification Unit and OPP Emergency Response Team are assisting.
