The first weekend of games for the new year were good for the Hawks. The second weekend proved the exact opposie.
The Pembroke Lumber Kings beat the Hawkesbury Hawks 5-1 last Friday night at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Danny Kananga at the midpoint of first period. Assisting Kananga on the scoring were Edward Downey and Matthew Itzkovitch.
The Lumber Kings took over the scoring then with two first-period goals and then singles in second and third periods.
The game in Ottawa the following Saturday against the junior Senators went better for the Hawks, though the host team won 4-3 at the finish of the night.
First period saw neither team able to get pucks in the net. Second period proved the deciding session between the two teams with the Hawks getting two goals to the Senators’ three.
Hawkesbury’s Joshua Agnese put the Hawks on the scoreboard first in second period with a goal after seven minutes of ice time. Assisting him on the goal were Anthony Sergeyev and Matthew Itzkovitz. The Senators answered back at period mid-point with a power-play goal. Five minutes later Arthur Lalonde broke the tie in the Hawks’ favour, with help from Xavier Lacoste and Andrew Feldman. The Senators fired two more goals into the Hawkesbury net in the last two minutes of the period to take the lead.
Albert Genest tied up the score for Hawkesbury in the last half of third period. Assisting him were Marc-Olivier Lauzon and John Kenney. A minute later the Senators added one more point to their score and kept the Hawks from tying the game up again right up to the buzzer ending the game.
The Hawks host the Smith Falls Bears this Friday then head to Carleton Place Sunday afternoon.
